German expat lauds Pudong's transformation over the decades

chinadaily.com.cn Updated: Jun 04, 2021

As someone who has lived in Shanghai for the past 32 years, Michael Kruppe, the general manager of Shanghai New International Expo Centre, is most fascinated with the pace of the city's development.

Specifically, the German is astounded by how Pudong has been transformed from a swampland to a bustling business district in just three decades.

Kruppe made these remarks in a video which is part of the "Shanghai Through Our Eyes" series that was produced by Xinmin Evening News to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China this year.

The Information Office of the Shanghai Municipal People's Government launched the series on April 8.

Kruppe first came to Shanghai in 1989, a time when the city's exhibition industry was still in its nascent stage. Today, however, he points out that China has grown to become the world leader in terms of exhibition space. Shanghai alone, he pointed out, is home to 1 million square meters of such space.

"With the attitude of the Chinese here and government support, I'm very sure that foreign companies know and can see that the market and China is still growing. Government support, government ideas, and the creativity of the Chinese people to develop new products and services will definitely attract more foreign companies," he said.
