The Yulin National High-Tech Industrial Development Zone was founded in February 1999 with the approval of the Shaanxi provincial government and upgraded to a national-level high-tech industrial development by the State Council in August 2012. It covers an area of 28.4 square kilometer.
Yulin is located in the northernmost part of Shaanxi province. To its east lies Shanxi province and west Ningxia autonomous region. It is bordered by Inner Mongolia autonomous region to the north and Yan'an to the south.
There have been found eight categories of 48 kinds of minerals in Yulin, which makes it a city rich in rare energy and mineral resources both at home and abroad. It is known as China's "Kuwait" and is an emerging national energy and chemical base.
The zone focuses on new energy, new processing and manufacturing, new materials, biomedicine, modern services and environmental protection industries. It has become a multi-functional and export-oriented comprehensive zone with a mature industrial system of energy chemical engineering, equipment manufacturing and new energy. The zone is a core area for the city's initiative to develop a national-level base for energy and chemical industry.
