The Urumqi Economic and Technological Development zone was set up in August 1994 with the approval of the State Council. It became the first State-level zone in the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region. It is a unique economic zone in Xinjiang in that it has multiple functions and mixed development models.
Located at the core of Urumqi, the zone is adjacent to the Urumqi International Airport in the north, Urumqi Railway Station in the east, the geographical center of Asia in the south, and Changji in the west. There is a modern comprehensive transportation and logistics system in the zone, including a network of railway, highway and aviation, district-port linkage and multimodal transportation.
A total of 28,000 enterprises were registered in the zone, including 26 of the world's top 500 investment projects, and 41 in China. There are 246 innovative enterprises, 72 R&D institutions and 23 innovation and entrepreneurship platforms at or above the provincial level.
