China (Yunnan) Pilot Free Trade Zone was established as a national-level zone in August 2019. With a total area of nearly 120 square kilometers, it covers parts of Kunming (76 square kilometers, including the Kunming Comprehensive Bonded Zone), the provincial capital, Honghe Hani, the Yi autonomous prefecture (14.12 square kilometers), as well as Dehong Dai and Jingpo autonomous prefectures (29.74 square kilometers).

It aims to build itself into an interconnectivity hub and the center for information, logistics, culture and education in South Asia and Southeast Asia.
Honghe Area promotes the cooperation with Honghe Comprehensive Bonded Zone and Mengzi Economic and Technological Development Zone. It puts top priorities on developing processing, trade, health services, cross-border tourism, cross-border e-commerce, and others.
