Established in November 1992, Kunming High-Tech Industrial Development zone is located in Kunming, the capital of Yunnan province. It is the province's first national HIDZ approved by the State Council. In April 2012, the zone was identified as a pilot in the first group of national innovation-driven parks by the Ministry of Science and Technology.Covering an area of 93.3 square kilometers, the zone consists of three areas, namely, Eastern District, Western District, and Private Science and Technology Park. It focuses on the development of three industrial clusters, including bio-medicine, IT & modern services, and new materials & advanced equipment manufacturing.In recent years, the zone is striving to build itself into an innovation-driven development demonstration area and a high-quality pilot zone. During the 13th Five Year Plan period (2016-2020), its accumulated main business revenue reached 1,060.6 billion yuan ($151.5 billion), and a total of 41 billion yuan of investment in fixed assets above designated size has been completed. The zone placed 34th among all the national HIDZs in an evaluation ranking list made by the ministry.In addition, the zone is home to 21 national-level R&D centers, 73 provincial-level centers, and 38,484 professional and technical talents, including 3,200 high-level talents. Besides, there are also 28 academician workstations and expert workstations in the zone.
