Jinpu New Area recently put into operation its upgraded land-based salmon farming demonstration base in Daweijia, with a planned capacity of 100,000 fish, giving a new boost to the local marine fishery industry.
Inside the demonstration base, around 50,000 salmon are acclimating in 64 indoor tanks. Technicians carefully feed them while closely monitoring their condition.
Salmon, a large migratory cold-water fish, is valued for its tender meat, high protein, rich unsaturated fats, and astaxanthin, with almost no cholesterol - making it a popular choice among consumers.
There are varieties on the market: freshwater salmon and seawater salmon. Seawater salmon is typically imported and sold chilled or frozen. Located at 39 degrees north latitude, Jinpu New Area boasts a long coastline and premium marine water resources, making it one of the few regions in China suitable for seawater salmon farming.
To build a large-scale salmon industry worth10 billion yuan, local authorities have invested 350 million yuan in the Daweijia land-based salmon base. Nearly 30 million yuan has gone into raising Pacific, Atlantic, and Coho salmons. The first batch is expected to hit the market after July 1, helping to alleviate the seasonal shortage of live seawater fish during the summer fishing moratorium.
Jinpu began salmon farming in 2018, and has since accelerated growth through resource integration, university partnerships, and marine industry investment funds. It now aims to expand the salmon industry chain further.
To cultivate new quality productive forces in the marine sector and strengthen the salmon industry, authorities are advancing plans to establish China's first integrated salmon demonstration base in Jinpu New Area. This innovative facility will combine leisure fishing, ecological farming, science education, and tourism, injecting fresh momentum into the district’s marine economy.
