Sichuan Tianfu New Area was approved to State level on Oct 2, 2014, being the 11th of its kind in China. The "Overall Plan for Sichuan Tianfu New Area" was passed by the State Council on Nov 24, 2014.

The new area was first planned in 2010, expected to host five million people and cover a special zone in Chengdu city, plus the city's High-Tech Zone, Shuangliu and Longquanyi districts, Xinjin county and Jianyang city (county-level), as well as Meishan city's Pengshan district and Renshou county.

About 94.04 percent of its planned area of 1,578 square kilometers is located in Chengdu, which is 1,484 square kilometers.

Six major industries including electronic information, automobile manufacturing, new energy, new materials, biomedicine, and finance will drive the development of the new area.

In 2017, Tianfu New Area witnessed the fastest development ever since it became a national-level one. In the first quarter, Tianfu New Area created the highest quarterly GDP growth rate. In the first half, it made 101.09 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 9.1 percent. At the same period, the investment on fixed assets was 117.22 billion yuan, a year-on-year rise of 48.4 percent.
