Meizhou Island National Tourist Resort

Meizhou Island National Tourist Resort in Putian, Fujian province, sits in the middle of West Taiwan-Straits Economic Zone. The zone takes Fujian as the main area and spans multiple administrative regions in China.

The island is 14.35 square kilometers in size and has a population of 42,000. In 1992, it was approved as a national-level tourist resort by the State Council.

Meizhou Island is a 4A-level tourist attraction famous for its Chinese Mazu culture. Highlights on the island include Meizhou Mazu Temple, Mazu Culture Film and Television Park and a ruins park. 

Mazu is a sea goddess, the deified form of the historical Lin Mo, a shaman who lived in the 10th century on Meizhou Island. Revered after her death as a patron of seafarers, including fishermen, her worship spread throughout China's coastal regions and Chinese communities throughout Southeast Asia.

From January to October 2017, the island received 5.2 million tourists and earned 3.3 billion yuan ($476 million), increases of 14.3 percent and 11.86 percent year-on-year.
