Huaian Export Processing Zone started operations in 2008, as the first of its kind in Jiangsu province to be set up north of the Yangtze River. In July 2012, the zone was upgraded into Huaian Comprehensive Bonded Zone with the approval of the State Council.

The zone is a high-tech export processing base focusing on manufacturing products such as precision machinery, electronic connectors and printed circuit boards, along with the supporting service of bonded logistics.

In the first 10 months of 2018, the bonded zone's total import and export volume reached $932 million, accounting for 22.43 percent of Huaian city’s total.
