Chengdu Economic and Technological Development Zone was founded in 1990 and upgraded to a national-level economic and technological development zone in February 2000.

Located at the Longquanyi district, some 13.6 kilometers east of downtown Chengdu, the zone covers more than 160 square kilometers (including the Beituo district) and is a key area approved by the State Council for the city's expansion to the east.

In October 2010, the zone was designated the demonstration industrial base for China's auto sector by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. In 2014, it was named the demonstration park for the nation's eco-industry by the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, Ministry of Science and Technology and Ministry of Commerce.

The zone aims to build itself into a world-class industrial park for the auto industry covering car manufacturing, auto parts and engineering machinery. It will be an industrial base for modern manufacturing in western China and a window for the country's technological advancement, opening-up, innovation and structural readjustment.

In recent years, the zone has made great efforts to improve the quality and efficiency of local economic development and seize opportunities brought by the country's Belt and Road Initiative, the construction of the Tianfu New Area and the China-Europe Express Railway (Chengdu).

In 2016, the zone realized a GDP of 103.9 billion yuan ($15.44 billion), with the annual production capacity of vehicles reaching 1.4 million. By the end of 2016, 93 high-tech enterprises had based their operations in the zone, together with two incubators and 35 research institutes.

In 2017, the zone achieved a GDP of more than 120 billion yuan and was home to 11 auto enterprises and more than 300 auto parts manufacturers. It had an annual production capacity of 1.28 million vehicles.
