According to the Advanced Manufacturing Industry Definition and Solutions released by the China Machinery Industry Information Institute, an advanced manufacturing industry is defined as a manufacturing industry that engages in innovative technologies, skills and materials to direct advanced productive forces, and is one of the following three types:

I. An industry that uses advanced technologies to transform and upgrade conventional manufacturing;

II. An emerging industry enabled by new technologies;

III. A new industry based on business modes and models resulting from manufacturing services.

"One direction is traditional manufacturing that uses advanced technologies, such as intelligent machine tools and marine equipment, and another is new industries such as bio-manufacturing and additive manufacturing," said Wei Yuhuai, senior vice president of Urtrust Think Tank.

In terms of advanced manufacturing, China has established the "China Silicon Valley", or Zhongguancun Science Park; "China Digit Valley", a big data cluster in Guiyang; "China Optoelectronic Valley", an optoelectronic industrial cluster in Wuhan; "China Town of Software", which gathers software, IT services and AI intelligence into an industrial cluster in Hangzhou; an AI-driven robot industrial cluster in Guangzhou; an electronic information, high-end equipment manufacturing cluster in the Yangtze River Economic Belt; and an AI and bio-manufacturing industrial cluster in the Pearl River Delta.
