On April 23, Sanya released the economic performance for the first quarter of 2023. The data showed that the city's main economic indicators achieved growth in the period.
The city's GDP in the first quarter was 25.25 billion yuan ($3.66 billion), a year-on-year increase of 7.5 percent, ranking first among all cities and counties in Hainan in terms of growth rate. Among them, the added value of the primary industry was 5.06 billion yuan, an increase of 4.7 percent, that of the secondary industry was 1.77 billion yuan, a decrease of 4.2 percent, while the added value of the tertiary industry was 18.43 billion yuan, up 9.5 percent.
The tourism market in Sanya continues to be hot. In the first quarter, the city received 7.5 million overnight tourists, a year-on-year increase of 33.2 percent, generating 28.19 billion yuan in total tourism revenue, a year-on-year increase of 44.1 percent. The passenger throughput of Sanya International Phoenix Airport was 6.2 million, a year-on-year increase of 51.1 percent.
With the recovery of the tourism market, the city's offshore duty-free sales have rapidly recovered. In the first quarter, the total retail sales of consumer goods reached 15.87 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 5.5 percent. The sales volume of offshore duty-free shopping was 10.48 billion yuan, accounting for 66.0 percent of the total retail sales of consumer goods.
