More than 23,000 foreign visitors entering at the Meilan International Airport in Haikou have enjoyed Hainan's preferential policy of visa-free entry for tourists from 59 countries, since the island resumed the policy on March 15, according to authorities.
The travel policy was implemented in 2018 but had been suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic since March 28, 2020.
Individuals from the qualifying countries can enjoy visa-free entry when departing or transiting from Hong Kong or other countries and regions with direct flights to Hainan province. And they are entitled to remain in the province for up to 30 days for business, tourism, family visits, medical treatment, exhibitions or sports competitions.
Border checkpoint at the Meilan International Airport reminds that visa-free tourists are required to apply for a visa when traveling from Hainan to other parts of the country.
The policy resumption demonstrates Hainan's welcome to the world. And starting from Sept 1, overseas drivers can apply for temporary driving permits in Hainan province through online registration.
Hainan has developed the Temporary Entry Motor Vehicle Driver Management Service System, which has English, German, Russian and Japanese language services to further streamline the temporary driving of motor vehicles for overseas individuals, including residents of Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan visiting Hainan for work, study or tourism.
Overseas motor vehicle drivers can utilize this system to pre-apply online for temporary motor vehicle driving permits and to acquaint themselves with traffic safety laws and regulations. Upon meeting the necessary conditions, they can acquire temporary motor vehicle driving permits upon entering the province.
