Sanya recorded a boom in duty-free consumption during the Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day holiday period, with offshore duty-free sales reaching 829 million yuan ($114 million), and its four duty-free stores receiving about 127,000 customers, according to Sanya Customs.
During the holiday period, which lasted from Sept 29 and to Oct 6, Hainan province saw 1.33-billion-yuan-worth of duty-free sales, an increase of 117 percent year on year, while the number of duty-free consumers reached 170,000, a year-on-year growth of 143 percent.
To boost Golden Week consumption, cities and counties across Hainan issued special vouchers. Sanya released government vouchers worth more than 70 million yuan to drive consumption, including duty-free shopping.
Two special policies introduced on April 1, including "guaranteed pickup" and "buy and pickup", also further aided consumption during the holiday period.
Duty-free stores in Sanya also launched new promotional activities and created immersive shopping experiences to draw visitors and stimulate sales.
